20 Detained in Opposition Rally in Central Russia
One hundred people rallied in an unsanctioned March of the Discontented in Voronezh, Central Russia, on Tuesday. Police detained 20 demonstrators on the way to the site. Opposition leader Garry Kasparov says authorities have thus “acknowledged the lack of power of the regime.”
Voronez authorities barred protestors from gathering in the city’s central square and suggesting an alternative site. They said a rally in this city 500 kilometers south of Moscow would infringe rights of other people. Organizers of the rally declined to gather at the site, saying there is not public transport to get there.
Protestors gathered in Voronezh’s central square as the organizers did not have enough time to inform of the new venue, an activist said. About 100 demonstrators then moved to the site on the outskirts. Police detained twenty activists on the way to the site where opposition movements had received permission to rally.
Garry Kasparov, a chief organizer of the March of the Discontented rally series, said in Voronezh that opposition activists in the regions face severe harassment from authorities. Attracting riot police to oversee a rally in a provincial city, authorities have “acknowledged the lack of power of the regime,” Mr. Kasparov told reporters.
