Dementieva Enters U.S. Semifinals
Russian Olympic tennis gold-medalist Elena Dementieva played a nearly perfect game against Swiss Patty Schnyder to advance to the semifinals of the U.S. Open. She will face 2nd-ranked Serbian ramrod Jelena Jankovic next. There will be no Russian men in the tournament’s quarterfinal. Nikolay Davydenko was on his way to it, before he lost to 130th-ranked Gilles Mueller of Luxembourg. Igor Andreev gave the Swiss great Roger Federer a run for his money before losing to him.
This was the 16th time Dementieva and Schnyder faced off. Their previous battles had been close to evenly matched (Dementieva won 9 of the 16), but this time Dementieva’s superiority was decisive from the very beginning. Dementieva’s reputation for instability and unevenness was not justified in that match.
Davydenko played a weak game of four sets against Mueller, who probably did not expect to go so far at the tournament. Andreev was not favored against Federer, but played such strong tennis that Federer could be seen to panic on the court. Andreev commented on the five-set match that “In any case, it was invaluable experience for me.”
American Andy Roddick and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, in spite of injuries, also made it to the quarterfinals.
