Georgia Rearms with U.S. Aid
Russian Federation Council speaker Sergey Mironov has expressed concern that Georgia is restoring its military capabilities with the assistance of the United States. He told journalists today after a meeting with a parliamentary delegation from Abkhazia that there is no doubt that the Russian Federation will conclude international agreements with South Ossetia and Abkhazia in the immediate future.
If Georgia attempts any aggression against South Ossetia or Abkhazia, it will meet with resistance. “We will respond very seriously,” Mironov said. He compared the situation to the German attack on the USSR in 1941, when “it all ended with the entry of Soviet troops into Berlin.” Mironov stressed that the Georgian authorities should not be confused with the Georgian people. He expressed hope that relations between Russia and Georgia will normalize.
Mironov also noted that there is no question of the Abkhazia and South Ossetia being absorbed by Russia. The future of the Abkhazia and South Ossetia is in the hands of their people, he said.
